The Union is a nation that can't be any more different than its southern neighbor and still share the same ancestry. Union politics has always been on the economically socialist and socially libertarian side of things. Things like uncensored TV,Marijuana,regulated prostitution and socialist policies are widely accepted. The USA is by a an far a true industrial giant with the highest tech. Social unrest in america against interfering in every single codl war trouble spot has manifested itself in the woodstock concerts, the protests and Martin Luthor King failing to win a third term. American economic inequalit is like sweden's due to socialist policies. Race relations are far better in this america. The sexual revolution is in full swing in the union and it doesn't appear to be fizzling out. An equal rights amendment for women has recently in 1968 been added to the USA constitution. American politics is so liberal that even the paleoconservaitve Union party is at its most right wing a liberal to moderate republican of OTL in its politics. America is firmly a social democracy.

The blacks in the CSA have to deal with aparteid and their situation regarding civil rights lags compared to OTL(the 50's of OTL"s gains in civil rights will happen in the 70's and the full giving of equal rights takes until the mdi 1980's). Christian conservatives are a powerful part of CSA politics in contrast to the highly irreligious USA. The sexual revolution has yet to spread south and it looks like if it does that it will be far weaker. Note that the chances of their being an independent Macedonia at this point are so remote as to appraoch ASB. It should be a part of Bulgaria or Serbia, or possibly Ottoman depending on their strength (it had a large Muslim population).
