Nixon Hospitalized Earlier, Impact on Pardon

In late October 1974 former President Nixon was admitted to the hospital and during that stay he experienced severe internal bleeding that nearly killed him.

Suppose that this took place 2 months earlier, in late August/early September just as President Ford is considering the pardon

Of course we'd need Nixon to remain coherent enough to agree to the statements that were issued but his being near death could give Ford a sympathy cover for the pardon that would make it less controversial...

And his death in fall 1974 would be interesting in the sense of likely no state funeral/etc as well as possible re-evaluation of him and potential sympathy (driven to grave by rivals)
