MotF 149: Don't Look at Them, My Child

The Challenge

Make a map showing the main population areas/population density of a country (particularly the underclass, but it can really be anything as long as it shows population in some way)

The Restrictions
There are no restrictions on when your PoD or map may be set. Fantasy, sci-fi, and future maps are allowed, but blatantly implausible (ASB) maps are not. However, for this particular contest, some ASB is allowed.

If you're not sure whether your idea meets the criteria of this challenge, please feel free to PM me or comment in the main thread. Sometimes it isn't as clear as I intend it to be.

Please try to keep images posted in this thread a reasonable size - feel free to post a smaller version of your image and provide link to a full-size version if you want to.

A scenario where softer environmental and social conditions in France lead to a weakened and ultimately crushed French Revolution, known as the "Little Revolution." The map is set in 1801, and the Ancien Regime and it's 3 Estates system continues unabated, the top 4 percent still own most of the wealth and the bottom 96 percent still pays all of the taxes. Minor demographic shifts have lead to larger shares of each of the estates in certain cities; Paris has an abundance of royals due to a centralization of monarchical power there some years before, Nantes has become a hot spot for the clergy due to it's new, large religious academy, ect.

Things in France are shaky, however. The Third Estate still chafes at the inequalities it suffers and a dashing military man known as Napoleon preaches equality and national pride. Only time will tell what will happen next...

Post World War One Germany is in a state of turmoil as factions all vie for power. The grand plebiscite of Versailles is decided to be enacted. The fate of Germany, Austria and the German speaking world is in the hands of the people. A New Germany Emerges, having lost some lands and having gained some lands. Austria joins Germany as a unitary state by a margin of 4% over the necessary 51%. Other regions such as memel stay within Germany by obtaining the minimum necessary vote. Civil strife ravages the plebiscite regions.

After failed Zhukov offensive of 1941 it became dear, that the only power able to defeat Nazi empire was the United States of America and its close western allies. Moscow was sieged and Joseph Stalin, a dictator with totally undermined position, fled to Ural with his companions. USSR's elites however didn't want to surrender. Thus, a plot was created to kill discredited leader. In 1942 Joseph Stalin was poisoned. He was immediately replaced with Lavrientiy Beria, who started to reorganize the Red Army. Historians say, that it was his talent that saved the Soviet Union from total collapse. In 1943. Russians won at Stalingrad and actually started achieving victories against Germans. who were severely weakened by harsh winter. This turmoil on the east however gave Americans and British enough time to organize a great and quick offensive through the Balkans. In 1945, Poland was liberated. Germans, surrounded by Allies, were on a brink of collapse. However it was the nuclear bombing of Berlin that forced them to unconditional capitulation and finally ended the war in Europe. After 6 years of bloody struggle, Europe was free. Nevertheless, the price that polish nation paid for this victory was huge. Many state that horrors of German occupation were never fully compensated. After the war, it was decided that Poland would gain all of eastern Prussia and Danzig, to finally prevent any future conflicts. On the east however, the Red Army stood firmly. Therefore, some of the Kresy territories were lost.

Today’s Poland is a blooming eastern-european economy with high GDP and good standard of living. Nothing is perfect though, and country is very often criticized for its anti-Ukrainian policies. Polish authorities state that these “security measures” are caused by strong anti-Polish and secessionist sentiment amongst many Ukrainians.

Ukrainian terrorists (or, “freedom fighters”, if one wishes) have a vastly different opinion…

While conditions for Nephites in Haute-Mississippi have improved somewhat since the lynching of Joseph Smith, and even since the "Hot Seventies" with the mysterious disappearance of Georges Romney and the passage of the Employment and Housing Equalization Act, but discrimination remains a prominent factor. Only time will tell whether the 2016 election of Marc Udall as Premier has alleviated religious tensions.

Here's a surviving WRE scenario! It's probably more ASB than the majority of my scenarios, which is saying something! Please excuse the bad writing, I was kinda distracted when I wrote it. Anyway, I really hope you enjoy, I'm pretty proud of this one! :D

PoD: Fritigern, general of the Thervingi Goth tribe, dies at the start of the Battle of Adrianople, leading to a decisive Roman victory in both the battle and the war.

Scenario: After winning the Gothic War, Rome found itself facing an even larger foe; the Huns. After Attila ravaged the Goths, they began to move towards the Roman border. However, a stronger Roman Empire with a larger army was able to hold themselves together a bit better, meaning that the Huns weren't able to advance into Rome itself. Even so, the Roman Empire was cursed to fend off invaders for hundreds of years, even after the division of Rome into two by Emperor Constantine. The Goths moved to invade again, followed by the Frisians, followed by the Celts. By the end of the 6th century, they pushed the WRE back to the Alps. Moors invaded Hispania and Persians invaded Anatolia, leading to the temporary fall of the Eastern Roman Empire in 701. By the mid-700's, the majority of the Roman army fortified the city of Rome itself, with some legions marching away to defend newly-founded cities like Quiricum and Tatiana. Rome became known as a backwater, and with tribes beginning to use Latin technology for themselves, there was less reason for them to invade every day.

By the 900's, while the WRE itself may have been very backwards, Latin culture penetrated most of everything in Western Europe. Latin became the lingua franca, and kingdoms like Andicaffyd spoke dialects of the language in their everyday lives. There wasn't much of a dark age, as technology from the Roman era was still widely in use. In Eastern Europe, things were a different story. The Eastern Roman Empire was described as having been doomed from the start. With Rome essentially destroyed by the 500's, Constantinople became the hot place to be, leading to invasions from Illyrians, Persians, Scythians, and Kurds. The ERE had destroyed itself due to cultural infighting by the end of the 7th century. They did end up reforming themselves as the "Latin Empire", but it lasted as a pariah until it was put out of its misery in 1155. By the 1200's, the land of Achaiddium (America) was discovered, and countries with Latin-influence colonized up a storm. But alas, the WRE wasn't able to send out many sailors, as they only had access to the Mediterranean.

But, to most of Europe's surprise, Rome made a comeback. In 1306, they bought out the port of Mallaria, and started gold-mining colonies on the island of Chrysosiae (Trinidad). Two centuries later, they restarted political relations with the now-organized countries in Hispania, Gaul, and Brittania, and started to trade. Once again, Rome became a revered city on the continent due to the wealth they received from gold, the cultural influences they had on Europe, and the military rule that had worked for a thousand years. The first military conquest by Rome since the 1200's was against the city of Massilia, which was a success. The second was against principalities in Rhaetia, which also worked out pretty well. A third conquest lead to the defeat of Gallia. A fourth conquest was attempted against Gotenaeca, which ended in a stalemate. But, seeing the writing on the wall, Andicaffyd joined the WRE peacefully, becoming the province of Andicavia. The same occurred with Hispania, who hadn't joined the colonization of Achaiddium and had a very weak economy because of it. Finally, in the year 1930, Rome rebranded itself as what was essentially an international union of Latin-speaking countries. They released Rhaetia and Gallia from military rule, and declared that each province would have a separate capitol. They made alliances with the rich Lusitania, the powerful Baetica, the neighboring Dalmatia, and the Celtic Dumnonia, scheduling unions which were finalized by 1970. By 2017, or 2770 AUC, the WRE is a liberal alt-EU, with Latin-speaking Celts, Germans, and Romans all loosely united in the goal of creating a united cultural empire.

Climate change has been a double edged sword. On one hand, a handful of countries have become utterly uninhabitable due to flooding. On the other hand, it opened up new land for settlement and exploration at the poles. And after the Lomonosov Ridge Incident of 2359, no one was eager to hash out national claims in the Antarctic, so the U.N. was given control of the whole continent. It seemed logical enough to the international community that newly drowned countries ought to be given land in Antarctica to compensate and after some finagling between Israel and Palestine, displaced Palestinians were given the option to settle in Antartica. Because the original U.N. mandates were only equal to the territory lost, squatting outside of the mandates became common and impossible to stop. The settlement of the rest of the continent unfolded in safe, regulated, and environmentally friendly manner, all carefully controlled by the U.N.'s Antarctic agency.

Everything changed after Yellowstone. Millions of Americans and Canadians were displaced by ash and later, hunger and political instability. Droves upon droves of North Americans fled the continent, creating the largest diaspora of all recorded history. There were three major destinations for the refugees- the Anglophone countries, the Asteroid Belt, Mars, and Antarctica. Shantytowns just outside of the massive arcologies of the South Pole were dubbed Little USAs, New New Yorks, Americatowns, and less politically correct, Dustervilles.
