Flag Thread III

I have a couple of requests I was wondering if anyone could complete. I'm working on a fanfiction of A Song of Ice and Fire and I need some sigils created for my OC house, House Farel (the story is wildly AU).

The first, House Farel of Pyke (betrayed the Greyjoys, rewarded with Pyke after the rebellion), has a silver traditional shark in the centre of their shield, on a field of cerulean and turquoise waves.

The second, House Farel of Caraban Cove (their ancestral seat), has a silver hammerhead shark on the same field.

The third, House Farel of Quickhatch Hall, (the seat awarded to Elifer Farel, the Stark ward in place of Theon Greyjoy, after being named Robb Stark's Hand), is a black wolverine on the same field of cerulean and turquoise waves (wolverine was the closest I could think of for a land shark, as Quickhatch Hall is located within the Wolfswood, and wolverines are awesome).

I tried to attempt it myself, but I have no skill in Inkscape, Paint.net, photoshop or anything.

Thanks for any help that can be offered. :)

^ Just in case of 'bottom of the page syndrome' - sorry.

Not really flag issue but I'll answer anyway. mixed cerulean and turquoise field is unlikely for arms as the colours are close enough to blend at a distance - you'll notice that in our world barry shields vary pale with dark (usually metal and a colour). Using cerulean/white or turquoise/white stripes with golden charges (or v.v re gold and argent/white) would be better.

Are you looking for flags done or just the coat of arms? Because there is a coat of arms thread.

They are much the same thing in the world of ASOIAF. The shields are emblazoned with the house sigil, as are the banners/flags. I didn't imagine it would matter...

What two colours would you recommend to represent the sea then? Blue and white?

Your request sounded like it could be for either doing just the COAs or the COAs & flag to go with it. So I figured I should let you know if it was the former that there's a thread specializing in COAs.

Flag for the State of Islamic Bengal in my TL.

Unnamed Scottish colony in northeastern *North America. Probably a bit too modern for the intended time period, but eh.

The simplicity and flower-like symbol make it look like a flag of a Chinese special administrative region. Don't get me wrong - it looks really good - it's just rather improbable. :p

Nice work! The colours look a bit washed out though; the red definitely looks too pink to me.

Looks communist

Well, anarcho-syndicalism is a far-left socialist ideology like communism, so they could use similar symbols. I'm not sure why they'd use the exact same symbol as the US Communist Party, though.

The first thought I had when I finished it was "is this Hong Kong or Macau?" You're definitely not alone there XD

Some of this designs are well done. Do you people use some special software to give it some visual effect, like if it were waving over the wind? Or just MS Paint and/or Photoshop?

You can get that wavy effect using a filter in Photoshop, GIMP or similar image manipulation programs.

I normally use a couple of other filters to make the flag look like it's made from silk or cotton and to make it look either dirty, worn or as if it's moving in the wind. It's easy enough once you get the hang of it. There are dozens of tutorials if you search on the web.

After you use the filters you do still have to edit the image it to make the shadows and edges look right.

It does look very modern, but cool nonetheless. Maybe a provincial or city flag in that nation? Or perhaps they had a constitutional convention and decided to retire their old flag as well?

Yes, in ASOIAF flags are currently banners of the arms themselves.

As I said, Cerulean & white or turquoise & white would work.
Of course you'll need to colour the charges so they stand out - i'd suggest gold or red.
Alternatively have turquoise with narrow white wavy lines in the bottom half and have the white shark on a top fully cerulean half.

If you're willing to wait a few weeks for me to get my new laptop I'll have a go for you ;)

I just quickly wanted to share this alternate Minnesota state flag. The symbolism should be fairly obvious (except that the blue stands both for the many lakes, the Mississippi River and the large iron deposits).

That sounds cool. Hey, I'd be willing to wait if you're willing to have a go. :) Thank you.

A flag for a union of Spain and France, from a TL where the War of Spanish Sucession was a total victory for the Bourbons.
