The universe started, or rather went down hill when Superman died. Men like Cyborg, Steel, and the Eradicator appeare don the scene all claiming to be the the real Superman. A year later Bruce Wayne, also known as the Batman had his back broken and was forced to have Jean-Paul Valley take his place as Batman. After that Hal Jordan saw his home town of Coast city get destroyed by the villian Mongul, which slowly drove the hero mad making Jordan go on a rampage, destroying the Green Lantern Corps, killing his friend Kilowog and all of the Guardians except for last surviving Guardian Ganthet. Diana Troy's mother, after a series of visions, called for a new competition to see who could be Wonder Woman, and through magic interference Artemis, an Amazon hand picked by Diana's mother, became the new Wonder Woman.

As time went on things changed. Bruce Wayne tried to get the mantle of Batman away from Jean-Paul Valley but was unable to defeat the technologically advanced, and well trained Valley from killing the criminals of Gotham who even Commisoner Gordon seemed to favor. Superman never returned and now The Man of Steel tries to save the day in metropolis in a non-violent manner, while the Eradicator kills without mercy to protect the innocent. The GL Corps is gone with only Kyle Ryner remaining. Diana was unable to get her title back and now Artemis is the defender of Thymescara.

This is the world's back story, Clark Kent is dead and not coming back, Wonder Woman is Artemis, Batman kills, and Kyle Ryner is the Green Lantern. This is pretty much all those "major" archs from 1992-1994 being long lasting, and not simple summer epics.

Another few items that might add to the dark nature of the ATL are the following PODS:

* During this period, in Extreme Justice, Captain Atom led Maxima, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, and Amazing Man in a very right-wing breakway from the United Nations in an effort to serve the U.S. military. They were later joined by Firestorm (Ronnie Raymond), Plastique, and the Wonder Twins Zan and Jayna. This could certainly be an analogue to the "War on Terror", wherein unilateral military action only serves to alienate the world populace from American military actions.

* Aquaman, driven mad by the discovery of his relationship to Orm (a.k.a. Ocean Master) becomes the Barracuda in an effort to wage war against the surface world, beginning with Florida and against his former teammates of the Justice League...

* Eobard Thawne takes over the role Barry Allen and the Flash, slowly perverting the role and legacy of the Flash, eventually destroying Keystone City in the process.

Another might be that Raven decides to go with Trigon when he comes into Azarath in her backstory, instead of driving him away, thus becoming a willing agent of her father, not against him.

this prophecy while it first appeared in Dark Centuries it is a Multiversal prophecy and while not all or even any of the prophecy will always occur it along with several others shall always exist throughout the Multiverse
