I'd disagree, Vasco da Gama's voyage provided enough material for the background of an Homeric-style epic.
And 15th century Chinese in Africa? That's gold for me.

I admit however that it's less relevant for Anglo-Saxon audiences

The film Scott of the Antarctic was not exactly a major production--it had John Mills in it, but it was one of those awful British 1950s pot-boilers.

Never seen. I saw one about Shackleton though.
