Simply put, how far can this remote, sparsely populated region in the middle of nowhere rise to become a great empire, either on the steppes or in Eastern Europe?

Seems ASB, but stranger things have happened. Though Muscoy has the odds stacked pretty high against it, what with it having both Kiev And Novgorod as neighbors. You'd need something to break the power of those two before Muscovy could really amount to anything I think. The steppe hordes might be an option, but they were pretty much always too disunited to pose a threat to the big powers in the region (though they were the perfect size to bully Muscovy). Though how you can turn the destruction of Kiev and Novgorod into the rise of Muscovy is something I'm not sure about.

Perhaps if there was a large steppe horde invasion around the time of the Lithuanian raids of the 13th century, the East Slavs could get squished on two fronts and fall, which could lead to the rise of alternative new powers in the region, including Moscow.
