AHC: Buddhism in India

See if you can make it so that India still is majority Buddhist or at least has a large Buddhist population up until at least the time of OTL Mughal empire. What effects would this have on the surrounding area, both religiously and politically.

I would say that Hinduism is too heavily engrained into Indian society for a majority or significant population of Buddhists to emerge. The Brahmins were just too hostile to the Buddhists, and without the protection of a Buddhist-friendly state, such as the Maurya or Guptas, doesn't have a chance to survive in Northern India. In addition to this, many external factors added to the decline of Buddhism in India. Such as the White Huns, Arab invasions from the west, the Mongols, and Timur. Eventually, Islam replaces Buddhism in areas that Hinduism had not already taken over.

Disregarding of all this, if Buddhism did take a strong hold in India and eventually come to be the majority religion, politics in the region might have taken a more pacifist stance on other nations in the region and internally, possibly meaning less civil wars and stability. Worship of other religions such as Hinduism or Jainism would've probably been allowed, considering OTL's Buddhist Rulers on other religions, i.e Ashoka the Great.

Perhaps they could have been as pacifist as Japan or the medieval Tibetans!

Yes, because people have never ignored the principles of their religion in pursuit of power. ;)

Not necessary. Jesus said to love your neighbor as you love yourself. He also said to show your other cheek if you are slapped on one cheek. How many Christian nations or kingdoms adhered to this advice of Jesus? Just name one.
Islam is also called a religion of peace. How peace loving were the followers of the Prophet, in the past or at present?
The actions of the soldiers of Japan during the WWII and the soldiers of Sri Lankan Army against the Tamil minority are models of the behavior of Buddhist soldiers! All armed fighters are alike whatever religion they follow.
