Arminger or Hynkel? Definitely Hynkel.I must say. . . favorite despot is a toss up between: Norman Arminger, Lord Protector of the Portland Protective Association or Adenoid Hynkel, the Great Dictator. First of all...part of me just loves the idea of a history professor transforming into an evil bastard willing to name himself Lord Protector. Secondly, well...who doesn't love Charlie Chaplin?
I wouldn't call Mond a despot. Its pretty hard to call anyone in Brave New World a despot. Considering who they are ruling over and his arguments about Cyprus for example. Its a horrible world for a normal man, or an independent thinking Alpha, but otherwise I can't imagine anyone thinking of Mond as a tyrant.Mustafa Mond, as he is a largely unwilling one only doing it for the good of the masses.

He has pretty massive power and no election. Sure, he wasn't ruthless, but he wasn't democratic either.
Yes but it was impossible to have a democratic system in BNW. If they even had elections, he would be reelected every single time.
True, but he still fits the definition of a despot, not a tyrant, but a despot. He's my favourite because he's trying to do the right thing. Though BNW seriously needs automation.
But the point of Brave New World is that society produces more than people need. If you introduce more automation, you have more idle time and thus more ennui.True, but he still fits the definition of a despot, not a tyrant, but a despot.
