NASA Astronaut Group 8 "The Geologists"-1969
In 1969 as NASA was preparing for the Apollo lunar LESA missions. NASA had a lack of Astronaut scientist with a concentration in Earth Science. NASA put out a request for more applications and picked a new group of astronauts. This was the first group of scientists that no pilot training was planned for since they would be flying as mission specialists in a non-flight role. This group created a media sensation when a woman was selected as an Astronaut candidate. For some reason when the requirements were sent out NASA had dropped the requirement that only males could apply. Who actual approved the dropping of this requirement has never been discovered.
