Without him, there is no “bounce back” after the murder of Tiberius Gracchus and the suicide of Gaius Gracchus; the Tribunes of the Plebs remain conservative and subdued, and the Boni in the Senate prevent social and military reform. Nobody even thinks of using Head Count armies, as Gaius Marius did.
