Although ultimatley successful, he blamed himself for the devestating losses suffered at Normandy, resigned his post as the Allied Supreme Commander in Europe. Eisenhower spent the rest of the war in Saudi Arabia as a military advisor. Following the war, he retired from the Army to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Keeping mostly to himself in retirement, he was writing his memoirs when he died of a heart attack in 1957, per his request, he was buried amongst his soldiers in Arlington National Cemetary.
