 **Barry Goldwater** (1909-1997) was a Senator from Arizona (1953-1989) and the Republican nominee for the 1960 Presidential election. Along with former Party Chairman, Ronald Reagan, Goldwater is often cited as leading the party to its more libertarian stance and was a vocal opponent of the big government democratic party, and its ties to the religous left.
-Goldwater retired from the Senate after a long, and successful career in 1989, and continued to make public appearances at the 1988 and 1992 Republican Convention in Atlanta and Houston respectively. After suffering a stroke in 1993, Goldwater ceased to make any further public appearances, with his family making public he was in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. In December 1997, Senator Goldwater died in Paradise Valley, Az after suffering another stroke.
