Session 1
Well, to begin with, I was born February 20, 1558. November 17 of that year Elizabeth succeeded Mary I and the Elizabethan Era began.
At age 15 in 1573 I went to sea. My life at sea was mostly unremarkable until the 1580's, though I did once meet Sir Francis Drake. He even offered to take me along on his grand voyage in 1577 but I came over sick and missed the sailing. By 1588 I was a rated Petty Officer on a man-o'-war and spent some time harassing the Spaniards before Gravelines. At Gravelines I took a bit of shot and was swept overboard. I can even remember the great gout of blood before I passed out, so you might imagine my surprise when I found myself washed ashore with my shirt shredded and bloodied but my skin unblemished!
Knowing I couldn't go home, I skulked about for several years in mostly a drunken fog. I vaguely remember being in Italy when Urban VII became Pope because it was an excuse to get drunk…and when he died of malaria less'n a fortnight later it was cause for yet another drunk. Everything is mostly a blur until April of 1596, when I found myself helping defend Calais against the Spanish. The city fell, but, to my good fortune I ran across another of our kind, a Frenchman who called himself Bertrand. He took me in and taught me the way of things and we parted amicably in 1608. I heard that he ran afoul of another of our kind, Maximilien, a few centuries later.
At any rate, in 1608 I finally made a return to England for the first time in two decades. But that's a story for another time.
