Thick as Thieves RP - Setting : Supernatural Creatures and Monsters

Creatures and entities similar to or (presumably) derived from the other types of living beings, these are anything from spirits and undead to monstrous analogues of animals and plants, or even bizarre lifeforms seemingly of an anorganic nature. No species of monster can be considered a true animal or plant species, as every monster exhibits supernatural and physics-defying capabilities that would be impossible to a normal organism.

As the old saying goes, “there are things between heaven and earth, and things between earth and the underworld”. Though the peoples of Aporeu are not prone to trembling in fear of scary entities from legends and superstitions any more than the peoples of other continents of the known world, there is certainly some evidence for the existence of bizarre beings and eerie creatures in desolate places and among long-abandoned ruins…

Work in progress.

Apparitions

Colloquially referred to as “ghosts”, “spirits” and so on, Apparitions are beings with an often hard-to-grasp form, often seemingly immaterial in nature.

Splicebeasts

Fabled monstrosities who's bodies combine seemingly disparate animal traits, or even animal-human traits, often in the most feverish and insane ways imaginable. Folk wisdom and some naturalists claim that these abominations were originally man-made, and were born out of the twisted magical and biological experiments that presumably took place during the late days of The Old Empire (“at the height of its decadence”, as many writers and moralists add…). Whatever the truth behind their origins, they do seem to haunt and guard some of the more inacccessible and remote Archontian ruins. Go figure.

Seawyrms, Wyrms and Dragons

Fabled, mostly reptile-like beasts. Come in many variations, from water-dwelling and land-dwelling forms to winged ones. As with splicebeasts, many people claim that dragons originated in Archontian times, out of irresponsible magical and scientific experiments. However, there is little evidence to support this hypothesis and the true origins of these creatures remain shrouded in mystery.

Sárkánykídjó
Also known as the “snakewyrm” in some easterly Aporuean languages, the sárkánykídjó is an agile swimmer and ambush predator. It is often keen on hiding and disguising itself before pouncing from beneath water or vegetation at its unsuspecting prey (it can eat creatures as big as boars or roe deer). The creature is very snake-like, with no weight-bearing limbs to speak of, and has a grotesque, warty head, with equal parts grass snake and komodo dragon features. Habitat-wise, it can be most commonly found in large swamplands and marshlands untouched by human activities and rarely visited by travellers. It's worth noting that their occurence tends to be higher in the vicinity of ancient ruins, especially those dated to Archontian times. Some varieties of sárkánykídjós have wings growing out of certain sections on their backs, but these appear rather vestigial. Though they can be used for short flights or “jumps”, they are unsuited for active flying, especially over any longer distance. Certain varieties of “snakewyrms” rely on their fangs and muscles alone, but there are several that are venomous and can even spit their deadly venom.

Sárkánygyík
Some say the sárkánygyík or “lizardwyrm” might be a later, adult development stage of the sárkánykídjó. However, research by naturalists in recent decades has debunked these older claims, since smaller, infant sárkánygyíks have been identified and observed in the wild (a risky endeavour, but Aporue has some intrepid zoologists !). The sárkánygyík is nevertheless a probable relative of the sárkánykídjó, though the exact relation between the two species remains unclear and unknown. Physically the “lizardwyrm” appears to be a limbed and more robust cousin of the “snakewyrm”, and is often compared to a “really fat newt or lizard, with a wide, nearly frog-like mouth”. Though the existence of winged sárkánygyíks has been speculated about, no known living examples have ever been observed or found. Unlike the sárkánykídjó, the gyík does not use venom, but instead has the ability to cough, spit or breathe liquids or gas clouds that are highly corrosive. This corrosive effect can vary from acid-like to borderline pyrophoric. (However, old wives' tales about these dragons breathing fire are just that.) Though the gyík also inhabits some of the same environments as the kídjó, it can more commonly be found in hilly forests, napping in dry caves, or under overhangs and rock formations.
