-=====The Metroverse=====+====== METROVERSE ======

-Arguably one of the most successful AH.Com RPs of recent years, the Metroverse evolved from an ASBWI and follows the adventures of rather disparate group of superheroes as they attempt to make their way in a world full of supervillanscrazy robotszombiesvampire Nazisdemonshomosexual German catboys and an increasing host of cameos from the world of fiction.+The most successful role playing game on all of AH.com, the Metroverse has run that includes five separate RPs. Prominent players include offtopic:Sigma7offtopic:99livesofftopic:Cambyses the Madofftopic:BlackWaveofftopic:TheDarkMessiah, offtopic:Georgepatton, and offtopic:randomideaguy. The Metroverse was named after the thread that started it all, which was a DBWI thread in the ASB forum which discussed the death of Captain Metro, the most prominent hero in the Metroverse. It has since grown from it's humble origins to the 10,000+ post juggernaut it is today.

-The thread was initially begun by offtopic:BlackWave, and other regular players include offtopic:Sigma7, offtopic:TheDarkServant ,offtopic:Georgepatton, offtopic:Cambyses the Mad, and the now banned offtopic:Fox of Ages. Several other forumites have contributed to the thread in smaller degrees however, most notably offtopic:Fenwick and  offtopic:Lord Roem+It won the Best New Shared Worlds Turtledove Award in 2010, and then later the overall Best Shared World award alongside 'AH.com Eternals'.

-It also won the Best New Shared Worlds Turtledove Award in 2010, and then later the overall Best Shared World award alongside 'AH.com Eternals'.+=====History=====
 +====Pre-1938====
 +Up until the 20th century, the Metroverse and our world are very similarThe biggest change from a modern perspective is the War of 1812In the Metroverse the war went significantly better for the United States, resulting in the acquisition of the whole of OTL CanadaThe Bahamas, Bermuda and the British Virgin Islands by the United StatesFor the most part, however, history moves in familiar ways.

-Following the initial roleplayspinoffs followed. The first was Metro Noir, set in the late 1930s, and the second was War Heroes, set during the Second World War. Both aimed for a pulp-based feel.+Things start to get strange in the late 19th centuryas Sherlock Holmes battles Aleister Crowley in a war of wits, nerves, and arcane secretsBy the 1930's the notion of the ‘masked vigilante’ or ‘costumed adventurer’ (based on Holmes' precedent among others) is a part of Western culture.
 +===1938-1946====
 +NOTE: The time period during which Metro Noir and War Heroes takes place

-=====Characters===== +The Golden Age starts with Captain Metro. He is not the first metahuman, but he is the most powerful and the most heroic. He is the first to operate out of the shadows to uphold both justice and the law, the first true 'superhero'. Others follow him; the Angel, the Tempest, the Mariner and the Bullet in the U.S. and Lord Albion in the U.K. Following the heroes are the first 'supervillains', most notably Nazi Germany's Kaptain Krieger.
-====Principle characters (main RP)====+

-  *Roland BradleyAKA Gunslinger: A former US Meta-Soldier and the oldest member of the main teamRoland might not be the strongest or the flashiest of heroes but his experience and determination have proven invaluableRoland has known Sarah since her childhoodand has a paternal relationship towards her, only really losing his cool when she is in danger.+World War II begins normally. The Battle of Britain is the site of the first clash between metas. In addition to Pearl Harborthe U.S. is attacked by German metas at New York and Philadelphia, with massive loss of life and property each time. Germany also possesses the Spear of Destiny, which prevents the Allied metas from attacking directlyInstead, they provide support at home and in the shadows.
 +====1946-1968====
 +After the War, the Cold War starts, despite Stalin's death in 1946. The Silver Age brings new heroes, new technologies, and new problemsHeroes like PhalanxTrinitythe Aquarian and the Jovian Judicator deal not only with supervillains and criminals, but with narcotics, civil rights issues, and the Vietnam war.

-  *Miguel AlvarezAKA Cyan Scarab: A well know American hero capable of moving at incredible speedScarab possesses an ubeat demeanour and can usually be relied upon to crack a joke under the most desperate conditions. Scarab's human name is unknown to the rest of the group, with the possible exception of Sarah. Currently teaming up with Kinetix as part of Heroes International+America here does not lose its innocence in Dallas in 1963. Ratherit happens in Saigon in 1968While John Kennedy is still president

-  *Sarah North, AKA Sentinel: A psionic of immense potentialSarah is one of the team'heavy hitters, and the full extent of her abilities remains unknownHowever being raised within the cloistered halls of the US Meta-Institute, and the malign influence of a creature known as the Voidwalkerhas left deep emotional scars which she continues to struggle with. Sarah views Roland as a father figure, and trusts him above all othersCurrently rendered powerless after being shot by Mick during the battle with Century.+====1968-1994====
 +The Tet offensive opens with a massive explosion that takes the lives of several American VIPsinclude the First Lady. The U.S. responds with decapitation strike mounted by elements of the U.S. Army'1st Meta Division and the direct service of the armored champion known as PhalanxThis is the first public demonstration of the use of 'meta-soldiers'humans given enhanced physical and mental abilities, by the U.S.. 'Payback Company', as the task force is nicknamedleads the precision assaulteliminating most of the governing regime and military high commandIn July of 1972, the Army of the Republic of Vietnam raises their flag over Hanoi, ending the war and reuniting the country as an ally of the United States and a future 'Asian Tiger'

-  *William ParsonsAKA Boomer, AKA Kinetix: A young metahuman with the ability to project a powerful telekinetic auraBoomer is a brash, well meaning young Meta who became a superhero to get girls. He was last seen defeating an agent of Century in Rio, but his current wherabouts are unknown. It was later revealed that William had began working with the SAS under the codename Kinetix. Whilst still somewhat Brash and Naive, he has learned to control his powers much more effectively. He currently harbours a crush on the Villainess Duplicatrix. The only other person who knows of this is SentinelCurrently with Heroes International.+America's sense of security is short-livedas the 1970s brings the Hoover-Kennedy scandalHeroic FBI agents and journalists reveal that the Director of the FBI and the Attorney General have been monitoring and manipulating key figures at all levels of society to increase their own power. Robert Kennedy is arrested and jailedJ. Edgar Hoover dies before he can be sentenced. America is left shaken and distrustful of the government.

-====Principle Characters (War Heroes)====+1976 sees the White Event. The source of the mysterious white light seen around the globe is unknown to most. Its effects are not. The number of metahumans in the world explodes. Germany in particular receives a huge influx, and is finally able to enforce the reunification promised at the Second Potsdam Conference, nearly fifteen years earlier. Adhering to the terms laid out by Second Potsdam, German is officially (and effectivelya neutral state in the Cold War, leveraging its unique geopolitical position to become a political and economic powerhouse. There are other, less noticed effects, as governments attempt to study the event and leverage it for their own purposes.

-  *Charlie Sobczak: A Polish-American US Army soldierSobczak was one of the earlier 'enhanced soldiers'being an effective prototype for the future 'Project Patriot'As effective leader of the international Allied special operations force 'Tempest', he and his compatriots undertook various missions around the world during the war to foil Axis operations+Following Captain Metro's retirement in 1980the Dark Age begins to set in. Heroes become more violent. The line between hero and villain becomes blurred as more and more metahumans grow up with no training or idea of how to use their gifts. Some, such as the IMAGE team and Professor Pyroat least attempt to be heroic. Others like Eradicator just want to see things burn. The Dark Age lasts into the 1990sIt is finally stopped by a combination of public outcry, a new generation of 'white hatsled by the NextGen team and the resurgent Justice Force, and the public reappearance of Captain Metro. Also, the brutal murder of a half million people by an alien demigod.
 +====1994-2011====
 +NOTE: This is the time period during which the Original RP and One Year Later take place

-  *William Bailey: An Irish commando, Bailey has the ability of invisibility and serves as stealth specialistAlthough not especially enthusiastiche was key component to Tempest.+It is called the VoidWalker Crisis. In 1994 an extraterrestrial life form of immense power arrived on Earth with the sole intent of conquering the world. The world's military and heroes respond, and fight, and die. VoidWalker, along with another called the VoidMind, kill over half million peopleBattles are fought in New Yorkin Los Angeles, and in Leningrad. The last results in the total destruction of the city. Ultimately they are driven off, but at terrible price. Ten years later, VoidWalker returns, perhaps seeking revenge. This battle is fought just as hard, but this time without as much death, and the world breathes a sigh of relief.

-  *George Constantinides AKA Achilles: Believing himself to be descended from the Greek PantheonAchilles possesses great strength and mystical weaponry, and proved great asset in combat.+New heroes like the SentinelKinetix and the new Phalanx rise. The Modern Age proceeds fairly calmly until about two years ago. At that time the world reels from the news that Captain Metrothe first and best of the heroes, has died from simple old age. As the world mourned, events began to unfold quickly. Apollo, insane member of the transdimensional race known as the Daemon, appears. He states his intent as nothing less than to lead the Horrors, abominations from outside the universe, in destroying all of reality. The first battle against him levels good chunk of Manhattan. The second, in the desert, sees him mortally wounded, but frees the Horrors with his dying breath. The third battle takes place in the plane of Stygia itself against overwhelming odds. Human armies and their heroes join the Daemon in battle. The Horrors are routed, just barely.

-  *Paul Blunt: Once an FBI agent involved with covering up the Martian incursion of 1938Blunt serves as commando with Tempest.+The world celebrated then, but behind the scenes plots were put in motion. The two premier metahuman teams, The Institute for Advanced Metahuman Studies and the Justice Force, were manipulated into fighting each other. Most of the Justice Force died in the conflict. The Institute then took the fight to the real enemy: Century, a cabal of vampires going back to the darkest souls of the Third Reich. In the streets of Washington D.C., in the Oval office, their plot to take control of the government was smashed.

-=====Background===== +Instead of rewarding them, the country, numb and frightened, turned on their heroes. The Rodham-Giuliani bill was pushed through. Metahuman Registration, often by arrest and coercion, became law. Instead of SWORD, the new organization STRIFE was formed to enforce the new laws. For the past year the nation became more and more divided as STRIFE became nearly a law unto itself. That ended when another 'transdim', Lilith, appeared at STRIFE's headquarters and tore the place up. Unlike Apollo, Lilith appeared to just want to destroy the organization, and did an effective job of it. Rumors appeared that there was more to it, that STRIFE was planning to eliminate every meta on the planet, but those were just rumors of course. Still, enough evidence of unconstitutional activity came about that the government, no longer afraid of STRIFE's power, was able to take it apart.
-====Metahuman Classification====+

-Metahumans are generally classed according to their power level, with 3 being the lowest class and 1 the highestClass 3 Metahumans are those with somewhat enhanced human abilities; metasoldiers for example, Class 2s usually exhibit a specific power such as superspeed or pyrokinesis, whilst Class 1s are capable of truly amazing acts. +That was three months agoNow the darkness seems to have passed, at least for nowIt is a time for new heroes, new legends. A New Dawn
- +
-====Technology==== +
-Due to the number of supergenious characters in the 'verse technology is understandably advanced. Items such as power armor and plasma weapons are found among key military units, computer and robotics technology has resulted in several working A.Is, genetic manipulation and chemical enhancement are used by major powers for the creation of Class 3 metahuman soldiers. +
- +
-====Cosmology==== +
- +
-The Metroverse features a multi-dimensional cosmology, complete with alternate Earths and far stranger places. This is unknown to the majority of human characters. The primary setting is referred to as "The Earthplane" by the trans-dimensional races that journey there. It is referred to as "MVprime" by players. +
- +
-====Current Major Factions==== +
- +
-  * STRIFE. The US Special Tactical Response, Intelligence, and Federal Enforcement agency. A recently developed government agency devoted to policing the US metahuman population and enforcing metahuman registration. Like many large agencies STRIFE is rather factionalised, with individual factions having very different goals. +
- +
-  * The New Movement. A new organisation dedicated to peaceful opposition towards metahuman registration, putting them at odds with STRIFE. Loosely led by Charles "Pulse" Fremont, an unregistered Meta of considerable power +
- +
-  * Arcadia. Home of the Daemon, an extra-dimensional race that has long been involved in manipulating events on earth, with individual members often posing as Gods or Angels. Until recently involved in a millennia long civil war. Now at peace, and struggling to reintegrate. +
- +
-  * Comintern. The communist nations work very closely together, and have recently assembled an international superhero team of their own known as 'Heroes International'. The Soviet Union is having considerable difficulties at home howeveras the revelation of the existence of the Daemon, and their apparent status as 'angels', has rocked the nation's atheist beliefs.  +
- +
-  *  ColCren. A US corporation developing a program of 'corporate superheroes'+
- +
-  * The USA. The USA is somewhat stronger than our own, as it incorporated Canada after a victorious war of 1812 +
- +
-  * The Elementals. Extra-dimensional beings representing the four traditional elements. +
- +
-====Dead or Dormant Factions==== +
- +
-  * SWORD. The predecessor to STRIFE. The change in organisation occurred following the events of 1 year before the present setting, when SWORD's leadership was destroyed in a clash with the Institute. +
- +
-  * The Institute of Meta-Human Studies. A school devoted to training young metahumans, home to the powerful Sigma Team. The Institute was officially destroyed during a battle between Sigma Team, their allies, SWORD, and the Justice Force. +
- +
-  * The Justice Force. Major US superhero team, almost all killed in the battle at the institute. +
- +
-  * Century. An organisation of Nazi Vampires who placed an impostor of the President of the USA. Took losses in battle with Sigma Team and their allies. Current status unknown.  +
- +
-  * The Elder Horrors. Eldritch abominations defeated by the daemon a million years ago. Returned in 2009 and were destroyed in a huge battle by the combined forces of the daemon, the Elementals, the US, and the Soviet Union. +
- +
-  * The Martians. Responsible for at least two incursions into Earth, including an invasion of Britain in 1898 and later a raid in New Jersey forty years later, the Martians were also responsible for the destruction of the Jovian civilizationLittle has been heard of them since. +
