Guyana is one of two sovereign South American states that have an official language other than Spanish or Portuguese. Due to the geographic location of its coast, several natural barriers separating it from its neighbouring countries and a rather different history of colonization, it is often thought of as culturally more a part of the Caribbean and central America.
