The Christianization of the Maya by the Spanish doesn't fail and the Spanish set up a proper colony - And, unlike in OTL, the territory of what we know today as Belize becomes a more popular, developed and concise Spanish colony, without the stagnation, overly decentralized status and eventual takeover by the British.

Challenge: The British decide to deport the remaining Garifuna to present-day Belize in 1798

1835 - The British outlawed slavery in OTL Belize. They wanted to incorporate it into a British colony to enforce this. Possible PODs : a.) Slavery is not banned in this year. b.) Slavery in Belize is banned as in OTL, but the British plan to incorporate the land into a colony fails or falls through.

1835 - In OTL, Guatemala declared independence from the short-lived United Provinces of Central America and inherited land rights to OTL Belize from the Kingdom of Spain. As a consequence of the turbulent situation in Central America during the 1830s, many Spanish-speaking refugees from Guatemala ran over to the future territory of Belize and settled down over there. Possible POD : Guatemalan independence is delayed/avoided or the unrest of the 30s is more contained, with less emigrees/refugees headed for OTL Belize - this could influence the society, demographics and ethnic makeup of Belize in several possible ways.

1859 - In OTL 1859 the Guatemalan government was approached by the British who wanted them to cede the tracts of land that would become Belize. Guatemala agreed to do so, on the condition that the British build a railway from the Guatemalan capital of Guatemala City to Belmopan. The land was ceded to the British and became the colony of British Honduras, with Belize City as its capital. Despite the agreement, the British did not build a Railway from Guatemala City to Belmopan. Possible PODs : a.) The railway is actually built by the British, as promised - in the long run, this could affect the economic, political and social history of OTL Guatemala and Belize. b.) The 1859 deal is not signed and falls through, with OTL Belize becoming annected by Guatemala (or attempts at annexation are made, but are not definite).

1934 - In OTL, this year saw public riots in British Honduras (Belize) because of: 1.) the decline of the local economy and the employment rates during the Great Depression of the early 1930s 2.) Belize City was greatly damaged by a hurricane in 1931 and the governmet of British Honduras reacted poorly to the aftermath of the catastrophe. The riots of 1934 led to (among other reforms) the legalization of trade unions in Belize.

Post-WWII years - What if the pro-independence Peoples United Party (PUP) doesn't gain as much traction as in the OTL 1950s and 1960s and Belize's path to full independence takes a different turn ?

1964 - In OTL, this year marked the British granting of self-governance to British Honduras, with the Peoples United Party becoming the first leading political party in the country, with George price as the first ever prime minister. What if these events had happened earlier, later or during a rather different set of circumstances ?

1970 - In OTL, the seat of government was moved from the coastal Belize City to the more inland, smaller and developing town of Belmopan. One of the reasons for this move was the fear of natural disasters }e.g. hurricanes, coastal flooding) posing a threat to the government of the country in the future. What if the move wasn't approved by prime minister Price ? What if it had happened earlier, later or during a rather different set of circumstances ?

1973 - In OTL, British Honduras changed its official name to Belize in this year, under prime minister Price's insistance. What if this didn't happen ? What effect would it have on OTL Belize's national identity ?

1991 - In OTL, due to the aforementioned land onwership and border disputes in the 19th and early 20th century, Guatemala only recognized Belize as a sovereign state at the start of the 1990s. What if the talks between Belize, Guatemala and Britain weren't as succesful, a rough agreement was not reached and Guatemala continued a hostile diplomatic or military stance against Belize for several more years or until today ?
