The largest Australian state. Originally a completely separate and free-settler colony from the rest of Australia (which was considered all New South Wales at the time). Because of this, it has no connexion with Australia's popular “descended from convicts” national mythos and is sometimes resentful of being lumped in with it. Although it eventually used convict labour, since it could not get enough free settlers. Western Australia was the last part of Australia to stop using receiving convicts (in 1868). Important cities include Perth and Albany.
