Troll Invasion Resolutions

Overview

Beginning in late October 2007, AH.com was beset by a mass invasion of trolls. After days of ceaseless attacks, there came calls from the membership for immediate action. While many suggestions were aired – notably, the ideas of Ian deputizing more Moderators or giving Mods temporary kicking power – this article discusses the legislation considered by the 2007 Parliament of AH.com during the crisis.

History

The issue was first presented to the Parliament by Historyfan 92 (YSP), who on November 7, 2007 requested that the Parliament discuss the troll crisis engulfing the board. This was immediately opposed by The Bald Imposter (KETWIWBP), who argued that any discussion would only add to the copious troll-related topics engulfing the forums. Acting President Sargon (E) overrode him, though, and asked Parliament to discuss the issue, in the interest of limiting the debate to just the Parliament and ending the proliferation of threads on the topic in the forums:

“Parliament is now convened. I now ask members to discuss this issue, and for the Prime Minister, fenkmaster to set up a poll providing there is a need for one. I also suggest that there be no further proliferation in threads regarding what to do about trolls and that they should be confined to this thread if at all possible. This is to save several of them talking about essentially the same thing taking up an undue amount of space in the forums. In the meantime I ask that the following existing Cabinet members ready their forces to maintain order and deal with the insurrection of trolls we have seen lately: The Bald Imposter, as High Strategos of the AH.com Marines euio, as High High Strategos of AH.com Aeronautical Forces Evilmittens, as High Strategos of AH.com Land Forces: Agentdark, as Special Operations Executive Blackbeard, as Minister of Piracy has already been asked to mount raids on the infestation. I further ask that the Minister of Fortresses, Gozanga deploy the new Sealion defence system, and that the Minister of Nasty Rituals, Shadow Knight makes sure that something special is planned for these trolls. Futhermore, I ask that the Minister of Moral Corruption, Ran Exilis keeps us well supplied with material to keep our morale solid. Our Minister of Defenestration, Michael may if he so chooses deal with those who cause trouble on this site by throwing them out of the nearest window. I ask Vice President Thande to further carry out his suggestions for an AH.com flag for us all to rally under. In the meantime, the emblem of Sealion and the Yorkshire flag as deployed in Hagia Sophia may serve as our banner. I also ask our Minister for Federal Affairs, Susano to gather together everyone to act together with Parliament in a spirit of harmony that will serve to defend us all on these boards. I would ask that Parliament pull together at this time, and that the board membership rally behind these efforts to protect our community. I may well call on other Cabinet members soon to perform tasks relevant to their office.”

Despite the Acting President's request, the issue remained untouched until November 24, when Sargon again brought up the issue, calling on Parliament to present a united front and deal with the issue of disruption in all forms on the board. On November 29, Steffen (FFF) proposed authorizing an expansion the Cabinet's powers, enabling them to take the necessary measures to deal with the troll invasion.

Result

Despite Sargon's pleas, the Parliament failed to respond to the Troll crisis. This failure, as well as the Parliament's generally anti-n00b stance, helped fuel the rise of the short lived Shadow Parliament of Fall 2007 and Noob Party (October/November 2007).
