 Formerly one of the German colonies in east and central Africa, later ceded to Belgium during the first world war. During this post-German and pre-independence period, Burundi was administered together with Rwanda under the name Ruanda-Urundi. Burundi's official language today is French and it also shares a similar ethnic makeup to neighbouring Rwanda, with most citizens identifying as Hutu, Tutsi or Twa.
