A lone subtropical archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, discovered at the start of the 16th century by the Spanish, Bermuda had been colonized by the British since the early 17th century onward. The low-lying islands with rather treacherous reefs have remained in British hands ever since. The islands became a proper crown colony in 1707 and are the oldest and one of the most populous overseas territories still in British possession.
