AH.com General Elections, 2009

The 2009 General Elections will be the first to include the newly established Landsraad of AH.com. The fourth Presidential and Lower House elections will also be held. The elections are scheduled for August 13 to August 15, 2009.

Campaigning and Overview

Campaigning for the General Elections began in April 2009, shortly after the Landsraad Special Elections a month earlier.

On April 16, Parliament began discussing the Electoral Reform bill, which (if passed) would set all future General Elections to the first Thursday of August. This bill failed to pass.

A poll conducted April 17 to April 18 suggested that the current Evil-led government had a 32% approval rating and a 24% disapproval rating. Such a low approval rating would help explain a second poll conducted from April 17 to April 18 which suggested a swing to the left: predicting YSP would win 5 seats, Evil would win 4 seats, FFF would win 3 seats, and the remainder would be won by LP and ESP.

The Lycanthropic Party began discussions on campaign strategy and potential presidential candidates on April 18. On April 22, Electoral Officer Pkmatrix announced that the General Elections would be held from August 6 to August 8, 2009.

On June 29, Pkmatrix announced that, due to intervening circumstances beyond his control, the General Elections would have to be rescheduled to run from August 13 to 15.

On July 6, President Sargon announced that, due to his health, he would not be seeking a second term. During the Alsace-Lorraine Vicariate Estates Election, 2009, the EGO Coalition and Yorkshire Socialist Party each had extremely poor showings, leading to EGO being reorganized into the Egotistical Alliance of Liberty.

Registration finally opened on August 9. Members registering for the presidential elections included Minister of Information LightInfa, former Prime Minister TheDarkServant, and DISPPR founder OAM47.

Following poor showings in both the March and July elections, the Yorkshire Socialist Party's slow collapse was finally completed when it failed to register at all for the General Elections.

Candidates for President

Registration for Presidential candidates is tentatively was originally scheduled to open on August 1, 2009 and close on August 5, but this was later changed to August 9, 2009 through August 12, 2009.

Potential candidates included incumbent President Sargon of the Evil Party, two-term Vice President Thande of the Yorkshire Socialist Party, Susano of the Federalist Federation of Federalists, Canis Lupus of the Lycanthropic Party, and Maharajah or Imajin of the Escutcheonist Party.

Sargon announced on July 6, 2009 he would not be seeking reelection. In his place, the Evil Party ultimately chose former Prime Minister TheDarkServant.

Rather than run again Susano again, the Federalist Federation of Federalists decided to nominate LightInfa, a Landsraad Member, as their presidential candidate. The Escutcheonist Party decided to support LightInfa's campaign rather than nominate their own candidate.

Although there had been talk of nominating someone other than Thande as the YSP candidate, ultimately the party failed to nominate anyone. This was the first election which did not feature a Yorkshire Socialist candidate for President.

Parties Campaigning for Parliament

Registration for parties wishing to stand in the Parliamentary elections is tentatively scheduled to open on August 9, 2009 and close on August 12, 2009.

Although campaigning has not yet started, it is expected that the three major parties - the Evil Party, the Federalist Federation of Federalists, and the Yorkshire Socialist Party - will participate. Smaller parties that have expressed a wish to participate include the Lycanthropic Party and the Escutcheonist Party, both of which contested the Landsraad special elections in March 2009 but were unable to win enough votes for seats.

Following its establishment in April 2009, it was expected that the Fascist Fascist Bastard Fascist Party would also participate. Since then, however, it was absorbed into the EGO Coalition for the Alsace-Lorraine Vicariate Estates Election, 2009, which itself was reorganized into the Egotistical Alliance of Liberty afterward. Meanwhile, due to poor showings in both the March and July elections, the Yorkshire Socialist Party's slow collapse was finally completed when it failed to register at all for the General Elections.
