The first in a trilogy of novels by S. M. Stirling, Island in the Sea of Time deals with the 1998 island of Nantucket being dispatched by a mysterious Event back to 1250 B.C. during the late Bronze Age. The series, continued in Against the Tide of Years and On the Oceans of Eternity, focuses on the struggles waged by the people of Nantucket first to survive, and then to defeat the threat of renegade Coast Guard officer William Walker, who seeks to build a huge empire in Europe and the Middle East. The trilogy is also known as “The Nantucket series”.

The name of the first novel in the series single-handedly popularized the term ISOT in the jargon/slang of fans and writers of the alternate history genre.
