Nowadays simply a geographic entity, the largest island of the British Isles which contains the mainlands of England, Scotland and Wales. Was a political entity between the Act of Union of 1707, when England (including Wales) and Scotland were merged into the Kingdom of Great Britain, and the Act of Union of 1801 which added Ireland and formed the United Kingdom.
