Suriname

Formerly Dutch Guyana, a state in South America. Suriname is one of two sovereign South American states that have an official language other than Spanish or Portuguese. Due to the geographic location of its coast, several natural barriers separating it from its neighbouring countries and a rather different history of colonization, it is often thought of as culturally more a part of the Caribbean and central America. In the 1970s and 1980s, Suriname suffered several coup d'états and the rule of a military junta. Since the latter half of the 80s, it has returned to democracy and seems to be doing better now.
