The most southeastern of the countries on the Arabian peninsula, Oman is an Arabian monarchy (specifically, a Sultanate) with a long and rich history, particularly in the field of being one of the centres of important naval routes in the Indian ocean for many centuries. The current Sultan is Qaboos bin Said, who took power from his father in a near-bloodless coup in 1970, with covert British support.
