Kazakhstan

The largest of central Asian “-stan” countries and a former member of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. Kazakhstan achieved independance after the dissolution of the USSR, but opted to become a member of the Commonwealth of Independant States (CIS) shortly afterward. As a leftover of the Soviet era, it also houses the only Russian spaceport capable of deploying manned missions, Baikonur (though this might change in the future, since the Russians have slow-burning plans to build another such spaceport within their own territory).
