The Progressive Republicans were a faction of the Republican Party in the [[XXth_Cetury]]. The movement began when some Equality Republicans refused to join the new [[Progressive_Party]]. President [[Richard_Ballinger]] gained the full support of the faction. Ballinger's popularity with the party prevented many Progressive Republicans from joining the Progressive Party. During the presidency of [[Al_Smith]], the Equality Republicans, who were joined by many former members of the Republican Party, attempted to ally themselves with Smith. The Progressive Republicans tended to emphasize welfare programs. One of the greatest achievements of the faction was the [[Boulder_Dam]], championed by future president Equality Republican [[Phil_Swing]]. Though originally hostile to President [[Theodore_Roosevelt_Jr.]], the Equality Republicans eventually came to appreciate his large government policies, and after the faction fell apart, many of them became [[Independant_Republicans]]. The faction was centered around the [[Equality_League]].
