The Promised Land, Land of Opportunity, etc, etc. 

Southern California is home to the AH authors [[Harry Turtledove]] and [[alternate_history:S. M. Stirling]]. Because of this, it features in an extraordinary number of their books. 

Also noted for LA, which is more of a state unto itself...

In AH, California is often, perhaps unrealistically, an independent republic. Alternatively it is part of British Columbia, Russian Alaska, or occupied by imperial Japan in some of the wackier Axis victory timelines. Sometimes, it includes the Baja California Peninsula just south of it or is called "Alta California."
