Zukov purged

I think he was close to it. If the Soviet Union had suffered any worse losses Stalin would likely have him purged. They suffered a disagreement which saw Zhukov replaced as Chief of General Staff. You have Stalin make this 'disloyalty' and have him shot.

It probably wouldn't have done *that* much. At that point in history, the only thing that would save Germany is a repeat of the Tunguska Event in unoccupied European Russia. Of course if you're talking about a 1930's Purge, it's hard to say, but likely, the end result would be the same. Usually, one man doesn't change the course of history alone. (I usually argue that Hitler and Churchill are complementary exceptions-without Hitler, WWII would have been significantly different, and without Churchill, there's a *possibility* of British capitulation).

Didn't they purge by quotas? If so, someone else would have survived. Might be better, might be worse.

Someone else will named as the best general of WW2.

Rokossovsky, Vassilevsky, Konev, Apanassenko, Vatutin, Tolbukhin, Bagramyan, Yeremenko... Pick up whoever of them. Everyone of them is no worse than Zhukov, and many of them are even better.
