Zuid Afrika all the way to the XXth century

What would South Africa look like had it not been seized by the British in 1795. I welcome other good PoDs for this, but for simplicity's sake I'm just going to make it "no French Revolution". Let's also assume South Africa isn't conquered by another power due to butterflies. It'll probably gain independence, or at least self-government in the XXth century. So, what would it look like at that point?
I'm especially interested in race relations (apartheid or lack thereof), religion and economy.

Well, to get this going it would be enough to give the British a replacement for Zuid Afrika, like Sumatra and parts of the Dutch Gold Coast. Then it could have been returned to the Dutch and maybe even at the dawn of the 20th century an independent Afrikaaner state would emerge on the cape.

Religion is an interesting issue: It all depends who goes there. I'm guessing that a bit more than half of the population would be Protestant, the remainder Catholic or indigenous. After all the Netherlands are religiously divided.

The problem of race... The cape used to have a very small black population which was the reason it became a settler colony in the first place. Maybe the lack of the traumatic experience of moving inlands and the subsequent clashes with the natives (particulary the Zulu) is enough to avoid something like apartheid to emerge, even though they would be considered racist to present day OTL regardless.

Economy... Trade, important harbours. No economic expert, but mineral wealth won't be a major factor for a LONG time.

I think the British would still want a base around the Cape area anyway; it is on their route to India, and will be very important at least until the Suez Canal is completed. Perhaps the British seize OTL Natal? That might make up for their lack of possession of the Cape.

If the Cape colony was not sized by the Britsh or returned to the Dutch (Franch revolution just can go on)
The British most likely take Natal as refreshing station, which thet build and govern as they wish.
Cape colony under Dutch rule means that despite a ban on slave trade, slavery will e legal until 1873. This means one of the main reason of the Great Trek is removed. The Great Trek, even if it will take place will be done by just a hand full of families. Most likely, if the Cape coloy expand in teritiory it will be North, and after a Berlin conference of the devision of Africa some were 1895 it could end up in a Cape coloyn with Botswana and Nabibie?
Since slavery will exsist until 1873 the colony will me more like present day Suriname, with the diference that there will e much more collored people( mixed European and KoiSan and some Bantu), who also are a large portion of the middle and some of the upperclass, and after 1873 it will see an influx of imigrants from Java aand India.
In short the long exsistence of slavery will remove the sharp edges of the segregation, it will be much more like in the Dutch East Indies.
An existing Cape coloy means uch re for the Netherlands durin the 19th century than for the Cape Coliny it self. Much more intersed in African posesions and an unlike sell of the old Coast (Ghana) in 1870.
