The mass hunting/killing of the American bison in the late 19th centaury is today mainly seen as one of the great American tragedies due to its far reaching effects on the US economy, native populations, and the environment of the Great Plains. It was and event that I understand was bound to happen due to the various uses of buffalo body parts including the fabrication of coats and blankets from their hides and the making of fertilizer from their bones and other organs. Also the construction of the transcontinental railroad and large availability of high caliber repeating rifles allowed large shipments of buffalo based products to be collected and shipped eastwards. My question/challenge is to have you create/suggest changes which could be made to lesson the killing of American bison so that a larger and more stable population may remain on the continent by 1900 than there was in OTL.
Perhapes either a change in the US economy could help?
