Zimmerman Telegram

The Zimmerman telegram was a telegram from Germany to Mexico in WW1 that basically stated that Germany wanted Mexico to go to war with the US to distract them from WW1. IOTL, the US intercepted this telegram, bringing them into the war. But what if that never happened? What if Mexico got the message, and invaded the US? They had sufficient reason to, with them losing so much land in the Mexican-American War. What do you guys think would of happened? Yes, I know that Mexico actually carrying out this plan would be highly unlikely, but what if?

They were in the middle of a civil war. And they'd have no chance of getting anywhere even if they weren't.

Yeah, the Mexican government would have to be made up solely of brain dead psychotics to even consider it seriously. It would have probably been overthrown by some Mexican general if they seriously proposed it. Mexico wouldn't stand a chance and they knew it. If ASB mind control was used then the Mexicans get kicked to the curb and troops are sent to France anyways, only somewhat fewer.

That is a very popular misnomer, the telegram wanted Mexico to ally with Germany in war if the US declared war on Germany because of unrestricted sub warfare. The Germans didn't really understand how weak Mexico was at that point.

It was probably not so much that Germany had asked Mexico to invade to divert their attention from the European war but rather that they used the American embassy in Denmark to sent the message via the US trans-Atlantic cable.
At the start of the war Britain had cut all German communication cables and secretly hacked US cable which had a booster station at the top of Scotland. The coded telegraph was sent from the US embassy to the German embassy in the US then to the German embassy in Mexico. Not wanting to upset the Americans by letting them know they were eaves dropping the Brits made up a story of how they bribed someone at the Mexican City telegraph office to give them a copy.
