Zahir Shah returns as King of Afghanistan

So I've been doing some reading on Afghanistan recently, and I found that there were two occassions when their former King, Zahir Shah could have returned the monarchy, once in the 1990s at the end of soviet occupation, several groups wanted him back, but because Pakistan's ISI feared his position on the Durand Line they removed his support and fiercely supported an extremist, leading to the Taliban government of the 90s.

The second time was in the 2000s, at the fall of the Taliban government, where the loya jirga, was willing to accept him as King, but the US forced him aside so their candidate Karzai could take power as PM.

My query is, which period could he most realistically return to the throne and exercise authority?

Or is it possible that the coup of 1973 fails?

I have heard a discussion that the calmer mujjadhadan would have gone with him, in 1996, as a symbol of better times. Like Cambodia did with shianouk.

Intetesting, so if e was restored in 1996 I suppose that might've stopped the invasion in 01 and might've led to a better economic and political situation

I think so yes. The president of my university, is the son of the King's greatest cabinet minister, from the 60's

I remember thinking about the same scenario, as he, as far as I am aware, was the last figure that appealed to all of the disparate Afghan clans.

Alright interesting, seeing him handle the US and Iran would be fascinating, especially in terms of whether or not the Mujahadeen remain a power after 9/11
