What if Zachery Taylor hadn't died in office and served a full term? What would his presidency be like?
President Taylor was elected from Louisiana, where he was a major slave owner. However, he believed that it was in the USA's best interests to accept that slavery was not popular in the Mexican Cession area. He proposed bypassing the Territory stage entirely, and admit the entire Cession as just 2 (humungous) states. This would end debate but at the same time would minimize the Free State majority in the Senate.
President Taylor moderately opposed the efforts toward the Compromise of 1850, I assume because he thought the complex negotiations would merely raise the stakes of the Free-Slave national debate, and he stated a willingness to crush any secessionist rebellion personally.
Nonetheless, I bet he would sign off on the different parts of the Compromise and would continue his fairly competent administration. He would likely decline to run for reelection in part due to being 68 years old in 1852. To avoid the memories of the tense year of 1850, the Whigs would likely pass up VP Millard Filmore.
Without the bad luck of two Presidents dying in office, the Whigs might be a stronger party in the 1850s even if they lose the next presidental election. But honestly I do not think history would be skewed much and the ACW would come along in the fullness of time.
