I don't know much about the language issue in the Philippines, but for Indonesia's case, one of the main reason that Indonesian (Derived from Malay language) language is very successful is because it's not a majority language in the first place(thus become a "neutral" language), but Malay language for a long time enjoyed widespread usage in the archipelago as a trading language. so I think English could suited well in the Philippines. I don't know the opinion of Filipinos, though.:eek:

I always imagine that Indonesia would shattered into pieces after Soeharto step down if Indonesia's lingua franca is the Majority language (Javanese, which is 40% of Indonesia's population) and not the Malay language. even without Javanese language as lingua franca, " those Ev0l Javanese imperialism" sentiment is quite prevalent in Islands outside Java during Soeharto's authoritarian era (it got better today as local regions received larger autonomy after Soeharto's downfall)
