Remember that the stop lines talked about, the Egyptian stop line in close proximity to the Suez and the Syrian stop line on the Golan, those were military objective stop lines. The Syrians and Egyptians were operating on Soviet military doctrine; they were to seize the quite limited objectives, dig in and then defeat the inevitable Israeli counterattack from firmly established defensive positions. Things didn’t work that way; For the Syrians because the Israelis responded to quickly for the Syrians to gain their objectives and for the Egyptians because under political pressure they pressed forward beyond their intended defensive line. Their doctrine was very top down and inflexible, so how things would have gone even if the Syrians had gained the Golan is questionable. Certainly they could have made it very costly for Israel but the Israeli training was better and their doctrine was more flexible and there is simply no way the Israelis would have accepted a cease-fire short of their counterattack having been defeated.
