Yes We Can: An Alternate Obama Administration Collaborative TL

FOREIGN POLICY

May 24, 2009: After the successful retrieval of Richard Phillips from Somali pirates, Obama introduces the Somalian Stability Act (SSA), which aims to prop up the Somali Transitional National Government (STNG) with $20 billion dollars in economic aid (means-tested and tested if it will not be used for corrupt purposes) and extra military aid totaling to $1 billion to bring peace to Somalia. 10,000 advisors would also be sent to the war-stricken country. The administration also pledges full support for the STNG.

June 11, 2009: The SSA passes the House, 347-108.

June 24, 2009: The SSA passes the Senate, 87-12.

June 30, 2009: The SSA is signed by President Obama.

The end of Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp

January 29, 2012: President Obama announces the formation of the "Presidential Commission for the transferring of foreign individuals from Guantanamo Bay to American Soil" Obama had intentions of shutting down Gitmo since 2009, but other legislative programs got in the way, along with domestic opposition.

September 28, 2012 and March 16, 2013: Congress approves the 2013 budget, which includes provisions to fund President Obamas Guantanamo Commission in full.

October 19, 2013: The Guandao commission publishes its final assessment. After careful reviewing of the 52 inmates still detained in Gitmo (there had been over 250 at the begging of 2009, but their number slowly diminished during Obamas presidency) and several prison facilities around the country, it was deemed that Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Illinois was the "most appropriate site to house the inmates currently located in Guantanamo". Transfers and legal hearings will be handled by the Commission.

November 29, 2013: First inmate from Guantanamo Bay arrives in America, President Obama suffers a substantial approval ratings hit for "importing terrorists to the country". In his memoirs "Yes we could, Yes we Did" Obama stated that when confronted with this by his advisors he retorted "I understand that they [the American people) won’t want them [suspected terrorists] in their home states but if it meant that they were treated like human beings I would have them in our backyard! Although I don’t think Michelle would be too crazy about it". By transferring the prisoners from Cuba to America, they would not exist in a legal limbo where they could be subjected to inhuman abuses, far away from the eyes of the government. While conditions in Thomson are far from ideal, and in fact far from even national standards for American prisoners it’s the begging of the end for one of Americas saddest chapters.

December 30, 2014: After a torturous year of legal battles, shouting in Congress and protests, the last of Gitmos inmates leaves the base. Guantanamo will remain a naval base for the foreseeable future, but its military prison has finally closed.

July 20, 2015: After years of back and forwards between Washington and Havana, the US restores diplomatic relations with Cuba. American citizens will be free to visit Cuba as tourists, and several economic restrictions imposed on American companies against investment in Cuba are lifted.

August 14, 2015: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton makes a historic visit to Havana, Cuba to re-open the Embassy, closed since the Cold War. Jeffrey DeLaurentis is confirmed as the first ambassador to Cuba since 1960 (OTL he remained chargé d'affaires).

March 21, 2016: President Obama meets with President Raul Castro in Havana, this is the first time an American president has visited Cuba in almost 90 years. Obama and Castro argued about the state of the Cuban Embargo - still in place - and that of Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. Obama reaffirms his commitment to ending the Embargo (eventually, but probably no sooner than 2020) if Cuba reaffirms its commitment to democratization. The Naval Base, however, it’s still rightfully and legally American soil.

The Banking for All Americans Act

March 8, 2015: Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren both introduce the Banking for All Americans Act. It restores the system of having every post office in the United States also act as a local bank. This system was started in 1907 but abolished in 1966. 7.7% of households do not have a bank account, espically in rural communities. Rural families rely on pay cards, cashing check services, and payday loans, which all are expensive. Now all Americans will be able to cash checks, get loans, and start saving accounts.

Despite the obvious benefits, the GOP and some Democrats come out strongly against the bill because of the implications of destroying small local banks.

April 15, 2015: The BAAA passes the senate 61-39.

May 1, 2015: The BAAA passes the house 250-185.

May 18, 2015: President Obama signs the BAAA into law. The law goes into effect January 2, 2016. (Post Offices are closed January 1)

By December 2017, 98% of American households now use banking services of some kind.

The Native American Reparation Act

June 1, 2016: Steve Cohen (TN-9th) introduces the Native American Reparation Act into the House of Representatives. Native Americans are statistically the worst off racial group in the US, with poverty, crime, suicide, unemployment and alcohol addiction all being much higher then the national average.

The act DRAMATICALLY increase funding for more and modernized healthcare centers, rehab centers, schools, road paving, community colleges, job trading programs, law enforcement training, and infrastructure improvement to actually lower unemployment. The act also removes many restrictions for natives buying or selling reservation land. The act also includes limited monthly payments to all residents of reservations and numerous other plans to improve the well being of America's native population. Such as Natives having more say with where government projects are planned (oil pipelines)

June 15, 2016: The NAR Act passes the house 399-36. Social media is shocked at the bipartisanship support for passing the law, with many believing it to help GOP members of congress win reelection in November, especially in western states.

June 17, 2016: The NAR passes the senate with 99 votes with one abstain.

June 19, 2016: President Obama signs the NAR into law with the leaders of all major reservations and Native communities in the Oval Office. The President remarks in a live address "The Government and people of the United States are deeply sorry for the horrors committed against the native people of this continent. Nothing we do will ever fully make up for these injustices"

Armenian Genocide

April 24, 2013: President Obama in a speech given on Armenian Remembrance Day refers to the 1915 massacre of Armenians as a full and total genocide of the Armenia people while also calling it the 2nd worst genocide of the 20th century. President Obama has fullfilled a major campaign promise.

The Republic of Turkey has recalled its ambassador from its embassy in DC and threaten to cut off all relations and withdraw from NATO. German chancellor Angela Merkel, who followed President Obama by also calling the 1915 massacre as a genocide in a joint press conference with the leaders of Britain and France, said that any farther action by Turkey would permanently ruin its chances of joint the European Union. Public statements by the European Union, United Nations, NATO, OAS, World Bank, and IMF all echoed by saying the 1915 massacre was a genocide leaving Turkey diplomatically isolated.

Get a woman in the dollar

November 19, 2011: "American Suffragette", directed by Patty Jenkins, smashes the box office and recives overwhelmingly positive reviews. It receives several oscars at the 84th Academy awards, including Best Picture and Best Leading Actress (Meryl Stripp -Susan B Anthony)

July 4, 2015: Goverment opens a poll to determine the next person to have their portarait in the 10 Dollar Bill.

August 18, 2015: The federal goverment announces that Susan B. Anthony will be introduced as the next person to have a portrait in the 10 Dollar bill in 2020, the centenial aniversary of the 19th amendment. The popularity of American Suffragette is believed to have influenced this, althou there had been a long campaign for "Get a Woman in the Dollar", and the next runner up was Harriet Tubman followed by Elaenor Roosevelt. President Obama would latter joke that he had voted for MLK, which came in fifth, and he owned Hillary Clinton 10 dollars. There is significat outcry of replacing Alexander Hamilton. whose fairly obscure popularity had skyrocketed since the rap musical Hamilton hit broadway.

September 25, 2015: In a leaked Email between Tresuary Secretary Jack Lew to his deputy Mary Miller, Lew complains of the hundreads of letters hes been getting about the 10 dollar bill. "Im not kicking out Susan B Anthony just because of that damn rap musical! Whats next? Newsis in the 20 dollar bill? Phanton of the 50? Annie for the 100? People are ridiculous"

July, 2016: With the passing of The Native American Reparation Act still fresh in the news, a campaign begins to remove Andew Jackson (who presided over the infamous trail of tears) from the 20 Dollar Bill. Althou its too late for the current administation to change it the goverment opens a non-binding poll. Harriet Tubman pulls an upseat over Alexander Hamilton. Musical fans do get the last laugh, as the combined submisons for "Jack Kelly" (The protagonist from the Newsies musical) make up 30 percent of the vote. Both presidential candidates vow to change the 20 dollar bill in the next 4 years

This is a little silly. so feel free to take it as non canon, I just tought it was funny how Hamilton did basically save Alex from being replaced. I dont know if Mr Lew (who I bet is very proffesional man in real life) would make those comments. And a bit of my bias is showing here, I did want Susan B Anthony to win, but I just couldnt let Tubman NOT be in the dollar, so why not both?

September 11, 2012: Its a warm and perfectly normal day in Bengazhi. Absolutely nothing happens.

September 9, 2013: President Assad uses chemical weapons in Syria. President Obama orders MASSIVE air strikes totally crippling the Syrian Air Force and destroying all chemical weapon stockpiles.

November 28, 2013: Assad is caputured by Seal Team 6 in one of the most daring missions in history. They land in the middle of the capital, fight their way though Assad's bunker, and flee the city to a US carrier off the coast. Assad is flown to the Netherlands where he is tried as a war criminal at The Hague and world court.

January 1, 2014: US backed moderate rebels seize Damascus. Phase 1 of the Syrian Civil War ends. The new Syrian government hold parliament elections and welcomes UN peace keepers. The Russian Naval base is also requested to be closed in 6 months. When Putin refuses, the US says they will blockade the base by land and sea along with arming the New Syrian Army (transitional government) with heavy firepower to remove the base. Putin agrees.

Putin, seeing Obama as someone who isn't afraid to use force, decides to not invade Ukraine. He decides to focus strictly on cyber warfare which is more intense then OTL. Because of this, President Obama orders more cyber security which allows the 2016 elections to be held normally because of extra cyber protections and more time to prepare.

February 28, 2015: The P5+1 and Iran sign the nuclear deal.

March 17, 2015: Benjamin Netanyahu Likud's party loses the Israeli legislature election. Zionist Union wins the most seats and in a complete surprised to the whole world enters a coalition with Joint List (Arab parties) and Meretz.

May 14, 2019: Israel agrees to withdraw all settlements and troops from the West Bank along with ending the blockade of the Gaza Strip. UN peacekeepers will occupy the Gaza Strip and forcibly remove Hamas from power and restore power to Fatah who will also rule the West Bank. Jerusalem will stay under Israeli occupation until future negotiations. The West Bank wall construction is stopped and UN peacekeepers will guard the boarder only on the Palestinian side and will not better Israel. No right of return and will perementaly dropped. The US and Israel recognize the State of Palestine as a nation with full membership at the UN. A airport and port is allowed along with a self defense force.

The deal has been secretly negotiated by President Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State Joe Biden, former President Obama, Pope Francis, Prime Minister Issac Herzog, King Abdullah, President Morsi and UN Secretary General Guterres.

Libya, Tunisia, Syria, Iraq, Algeria, and Saudi Arabia all recognize Israel and start full diplomatic relations.

Paris Climate Agreement - The Basics

November 30-December 12, 2015: The United Nations helds a its final meetings in Paris for the drafting of an international anti-climate change agreement, with the goal of reducing greenhouse emissions over a period years starting in 2020

April 22, 2016: The Paris Climate agreement is open for signature in NYC, each country will set its "nationally determined contributions", set to reduce emission and pollution. Plus the promise of financial aid to less developed countries from richer states to move away from polluting energy. Americas NDCs, originally somewhat modest, are set much higher after Secretary of State John Kerry and President Barack Obama push for a more "ambitious" programme.

November 4, 2020: President Hillary Clinton, the day after being re elected, restates Americas "total and complete support for the Paris Climate agreement and a green and bright future"

April 22, 2026: President Beau Biden announces America is "well on her way" to achieving the goals set up by the Obama and Clinton administration of emission reduction. International organizations like Greenpeace and BlueWAVE praise Americas "above and beyond" efforts to commit to the future and the enviroment.

So this kinda goes a little to far into the future (and kinda sets in stone that HRC will be president along with Biden, because someone wanted that), so again feel free to not take its as canon if you feel Im narrowing this too much. I did have more especific ideas post 2017 about how to enforce the Paris Climate Agremeent in America, but I didnt want to be too "pushy"
