XX-XXI Century Alternate History Clichés

  • Maoist China turning into Mega-North Korea (occasionally ruled by a Kim-esque Mao Dynasty)

China getting nuked

I mean, The East is Red, by YLi doesn't follow these cliches, but it can be a tad implausible (read:sometimes borderline ASB), and is a massive Chinawank. China somehow switches to capitalism in the 60s, Mao is turned into Zhou Enlai's puppet, and China somehow avoids nuclear destruction... twice.

That's the most realistic version of what would happen if there was an Imperial Federation, but it isn't often acknowledged.

The TL Malê Rising had something similar with Portugal and Angola federating, but Angola eventually dominates it thanks to demographics which causes discontent in Portugal. I could imagine something similar would happen regarding Britain and India.

Pretty much the only version that will work, though Indian influence would be moderated somewhat by Africa and Malaya, plus the fact that India is not a single monolithic block. However the real focus of any Imperial federation will be the Indian Ocean.

And that shift of power is why an Imperial Federation with the non-white colonies is totally implausible, outside something like a Peshawar Lancers scenario.

I'd say only unlikely and some very early changes are needed (the Lilbert bill has to go through at the very least and Indianisation needs to come decades earlier). But the focus of the Empire will shift east even with a purely European federation. If the Empire starts looking east before it comes out of the "splendid isolation" it becomes a possibility. Like I said, you need a lot of changes to make it work. The racist attitudes in the British elites are hard to shift, but not totally impossible.

Nothing interesting ever happens in Southeast Asia, Oceania or the Pacific with the exception of China, Japan or the USA invading something.

The US will always end up colonizing most of North America, their settlers are unstoppable and their militias will always be enough to win due to Mexico, Spain, etc being too incompetent. The only exception to this is Britain/Canada.

I've seen the Civil War thread and I think this could also be a good idea.

I'd say MacArthur as the "American Führer"

Post your b̶e̶s̶t̶ worst clichés
-There will be at least two events analogous to OTL's World Wars
-Austria Hungary always performs poorly, even if the dumpster fire that was the lead up to the battle of Galicia shouldn't be replicated by default
-If the CP is victorious Austria-Hungary will still magically explode cuz muh nationalism (ditto Ottomans)
-the KKK will unanimously be Nazi collaborators
-Italy's performance in WWII is dismal regardless of circumstance
-If Italy stays out of WWII it's forming a fashy NATO/Warsaw Pact analog
-The Democrats will always leap frog the Republicans to become America's "left wing" party
-South Vietnam is doomed, and any surviving South Vietnam would have been better off had it capitulated to the North
or
-a surviving South Vietnam becomes an Asian Tiger and is a liberal democracy by the 2000s
-Yugoslavia will be neutral, regardless of the situation (even though it wasn't all that neutral otl)
-Obama will still be the first not white president of the USA
-post-colonial Africa will still be generally quite bad, unless not!Ian Smith or not!Thomas Sankara comes to power in their country and turns that country in to a [pick your flavour of politics] wingnut's fantasy realm
-Any Iran that goes through the revolution will inevitably become the centre of the axis of evil

-Ukraine can never win a war of independence on her own
-All it takes is one cooky president to turn America into a dictatorship
-China is either Soviet Union 2.0 or what it is IOTL
-The U.S and the U.K never have bad relations and are always the best of friends and allies

That last one, ironically, is the opposite of its predecessor—you will almost never see an Anglo-American alliance in a pre-1900 TL (with the exception of Quasi-War TLs).

In an Axis victory TL: It's super easy for Nazi Germany to win the Eastern Front and trivial to occupy up to the Urals, but impossible for them to survive past 1970.
