1.

Churchill looked at the document delivered via the Swiss embassy in utter astonishment:

1940-VI-10: The Fuhrer cordially invites the British People to participate in the XII Olympiad now hosted by Berlin at the request of the International Olympic Committee.

The Fuhrer wishes to make it clear to the Peoples of Great Britain that he has no designs on their Islands or their Empire. He has no desire for two Great Nations to blunt their steel against each other wherein lies tragedy for both. Germany’s natural sphere of influence is continental Europe and it must be permitted to achieve its ambitions just as Great Britain now controls a vast Empire of subjects.

Japan has made it clear that it is unable to fulfil its role as host of the games and the International Olympic Committee has approached Germany as the only practical host of the games. We have been granted an extra month to prepare and the games will take place in Berlin in September 1940.

We beseech the British People to put aside their petty differences and join as equal nations in sorting out our pre-eminence on the sporting field rather than the battlefield.

The Fuhrer pledges the speedy return of Prisoners of War and the return to the Peacetime relations enjoyed by both nations. In the meantime he pledges that the British Mainland will not be assaulted by Land, Sea or Air though any British forces outside of these limits will be engaged with the full might of the Wermacht.

Churchill groaned inwardly: what dire Nazi trickery was this?

“Can you be sure this is genuine?”

“Yes, Sir. Our spy tells us even the Heer are shocked.”

“Not as much as I – I am sure!”

Churchill had to admit this was not running to script. The Boche should now being planning the final coup as they would invade these Islands. Hitler’s ego could have it no other way even though Churchill knew that Nazi Despot was doomed to failure.

There were three mighty barriers that must be surmounted:

1. Air Superiority would have to be obtained by defeat of the RAF.
2. A Naval corridor would have to be opened through Britains invincible navy.
3. The hazards of an amphibious landing against a determined defender would have to be surmounted.

Churchill guessed that even the first hurdle might trip Hitler and his cronies. It would be a long struggle but the British people would unite behind the Coalition Government once their precious Island came under attack.

“This must be kept from the British People. It will sap their stamina for the fight which must surely come.”

But there was little he could do to suppress Hitler’s peculiar invitation to an Olympic Party. That night Ju88’s of KG100 delivered thousands of leaflets to South Eastern England.
