Are the circumstances under which the US could be at war with Nazi Germany but with Stalin's Soviet Union neutral.
This assumes one clever and one stupid move from Hitler (or some other Nazi leader if something had happend to him.)
The sane move is postponing Barbarossa until Britain's defeat. The daft one is war with the US.
I assume that had Britain been the main target the U boat war would have been more intensive and this could have provoked things.
A Nazi leader could have declared war on the US after Pearl Harbor even if not at war with the USSR.
My guesses about the nature of such a war
1) Longer
2) Nazis lose eventually
3) The persecution of some European minorities might not have reached the point of genocide. My sense is that the unique brutality of Barbarossa and the perceived link between Jewish people and the Bolsheviks were a major factor in the decision to go for 'a final solution'.
Any thoughts?
In relation to nuclear weapons how much difference would they make. As I see it they could only be used at a stage when the Allies have Air Supremacy.
I do not see Hitler surrendering following a nuke though I do think another leadership might take a different view.
Would late 1940s tech have allowed the effective use of nuclear weapons on troop concentrations either in a desert or on German territory (I assume they would not be let off on occupied lands)
