WW2: What if the Japanese had conquered India?

What if the Japanese during WW2 had conquered India? How they would treat the Indians? It would be an independent India or annexed to the Japanese Empire like Korea?

1. Japan conquering India is closer to an ASB scenario than a successful Sealion.

2. If the ASBs intervene and allow Japan to conquer India, they would likely treat its people in precisely the same manner as they had treated the people in other territories they had conquered. Not well, in other words.

3. I imagine they would try to set up some sort of puppet government, since direct rule is obviously impossible. But given #1, it's not a question worth asking anyway.

Baring the ASB...
Independent, no other way. Annexation would be impossible, already that UK promised them some sort of independence no elite or common people would accept to be ruled from Tokyo, they would face revolts and lawlessness on most of the Indian territory

Indian puppet state under Subhas Chandra Bose is the most likely, provided Japan could get anywhere close to succeeding. However, based on the OTL administration of his puppet government on the Andaman and Nicobar islands (i.e. Japanese-ruled), and general attitude of Japanese soldiers to Indians in Malaya (i.e. fair if you try your hardest to Japanize yourself, very bad if not) we can safely say not much will change from British rule, or even worsen. Indian perceptions of the INA and Japan would certainly be far less favourable.
