WW2: Britain's king steps down & leads RAF

After stepping down from the throne to marry Wallace Simpson, could he still have a role in the Royal Air Force?*

(or does giving up the throne - even peacefully - mean he can't hold positions of power at all)

* = I was thinking he might do this to demonstrate that he's as anti-Jerry as his brother.

The Duke of Windsor was an soldier not a airdale. The mug didn't even stay by his post during the French campaign. He evac'ed his household in Paris through Spain. Never got a whiff of Dunkirk.

The Duke of Windsor was evacuated from the French Riveria where he lived (not Paris) so why would he go through Dunkirk.

This evacuation was more a British government forcing him to do it rather than him wanting to do it. Its well known that good ole' Eddie was privatley pro-Nazi.

Eventually he was appointed as Governor of Bermuda or something.... convenient as it places him on the other side of the ocean, out of the war and out of the public's eye.

At no time would the professional British Royal Air Force submit itself to being headed by a former King who was not even a Prince anymore, but just a mere Duke, who had no prior experience of aerial combat or aerial warfare as a whole!

so, if he wanted to get in the fighting, he'd be in the Land Army?

(this is for a dysotopia, and the Duke will just be a mention anyway - so I want to be sure I get that mention plausible)

is that "well known that" because Hitler said he'd prefer Eddie as King of England?*

(that doesn't really mean anything - even bin Laden's announced who he wants to win the US Presidency)

* = "well known that"s are fairly common, and are about 50/50 in terms of accurate/misleading.

Nope- he was a Nazi-sympathiser and anti-semite who, after the German occupation of France actually communicated with the German government requesting that they place guards on his homes in France to protect them from robbery. The Germans complied.

Now, setting up personal deals with a country with which your own is at war can only be construed as rather bad form.

very true.

I hadn't heard that he asked for Nazi protection. I had heard that Hitler had said that Eddie should be King of England.

thanks for clarifying that.

Yeah I forgot that whole German-guarding-the-home thing... I find it especially interesting as the area ways part of Vichy France until 1942.
