WW1 Offensive into Alsace or Lorraine

I know the terrain isn't the best for it, but I'm curious about something: during the period of stalemate from late 1914 to early 1918, did the Entente ever consider an offensive into Alsace or Lorraine? It seems to me that section of the front just stayed static for practically the entire war...

the german possession of the saint michele sailent prevented this. the french would have been hemmed in on both sides. breaking though would only run them smack into the great fortress of metz which even a full corps of patton's army 30 years later needed months to reduce. (the french did this at the start of the war in the battle of the frontiers and were utterly destroyed by second rate german troops)

generally any frontal attack conducted by the entente prior to them building up immense numbers of aircraft and tanks in 1917-1918 is bound to fail against german defensive tactics.
