Wounded Once More: An Intensified WoT

Chapter 1

Times Square,NY

Spring had started almost 2 months ago but the chill of winter still hung in the air. Though not freezing, a noticeable chill was on the rise as the temperatures began to drop into the 50s and most likely the low 40s once night rolled around. Thus, for the many citizens and tourists of Times Square, it was still jacket and sweater season, at least for today.

The sounds and sites of the city could be heard all around as people hurriedly bustled to catch trains, go to the next store, or to see if they could catch a show. At the Astor Plaza, people kept walking along, some heading towards the Plaza’s shopping centers while others went to see if they could grab tickets for a showing of the Lion King at the Minskoff Theatre. A SUV with tinted windows pulled up infront of the entrance to the theatre. Quickly putting on it’s hazard lights, the driver stepped out and half-walked, half jogged away.

Strange, but it had been done before, mostly by out of townees who wanted to grab something out on the streets quickly but not waste time parking. Most New Yorker's knew better. It was a good way to get a ticket or get towed, sometimes both. A nearby mounted officer saw the parked car and rolled his eyes. He urged his horse forward and went to go read the Connecticut license plate to dispatch.

Before, he could though something caught his eye. The windows were tinted and the shadow of the nearby buildings made it hard to see but pressing up against the glass, the officer could see some round metallic objects inside. It looked like tanks to store liquid. He called into dispatch, giving a description of the vehicle, something was up and it was making the officer nervous. Just as he went to look inside again to confirm what he saw, the car exploded with a thunderous boom….

Chapter 2

Times Square,New York
7th Avenue was a complete disaster. Within a mile radius, glass had shattered from the buildings and stores that lined the famous street. The massive electronic signs that dominated the area were cracked, broken and in some cases, dangerously hanging from their hooks. The sight of the bombing itself was horrific. Astor Plaza had chunks of the building missing, mostly near the lower walls while almost every single window had been blown out. Small fires raged around the base of the building. Those around the car when the blast went off were incinerated or burned beyond recognition. Many not caught in the blast were struck by metal shrapnel from the from the destruction of the cars surrounding the bomb.

However, the cause of most deaths and injuries was the glass raining down from the buildings high above. Everything from giant shards to baseball sized debris had rained on the unsuspecting people. Even after the initial shattering, gusts of wind would blow loose panels out and sent them hurtling below., sometimes smashing on a dazed and confused survivor.

Panic began to set in as people screamed and rushed to find safe refuge. Many expected another attack, others just ran in an adrenaline fueled frenzy. On such a crowded day this lead to the second reason for death and injury: A Stampede. Fearing for their lives, people stepped on the injured or on those not able to keep up, the poor souls begin crushed by the massive amount weight of those fleeing.

The emergency response was quick however. The nearby Army Recruiter station sprung into action once the confusion ended. Some of the men and women stationed inside had served in Middle East and knew exactly what happened. They tried to move the wounded away from the crowds of running people, but too few in number to even try to direct the surge. Police officers who had not been too injured by the blast set to work in helping calm the crowd and get them to safety. Further along, the FDNY and other NYPD units attempted to move into help but the bomb had caused a massive traffic jam, creating barricades to the heart of Times Square. Many got as close as they could and rushed on foot to the scene.

Within two hours, there was some semblance of control as the police evacuated anyone not too injured to move. A barricade was set up from 43rd Street to 49th on Seventh Ave and also extended from 45th street on Seventh to Eighth Ave.

Once again New York had been attacked but the burning question that would rage on for days would be by who?

Longer updates, please! The current length doesn't feel like enough to satisfy.

I'll do my best! I didn't want to go long in the last post. The next one will deal with Obama's, Ray Kelly's and Bloomberg's reaction to the bombing, as well the beginning of the investigation to who caused it.
