Would the US look for more, less, none, or the same amount of Mexico if it had Canada?

Provided the US took Canada, whether that is during the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812, would the US look for more or less of Mexico?

The US would already have a large and relatively secured access to the Pacific here. It would also have more free states, which would change US politics on slavery quite a bit over 30+ years.

Then, the US has a potentially troublesome French Catholic Quebec, along with a larger white and Anglo population.

Huge variables here.

What do you believe America’s policy towards the South West would likely be?

Yes, the US would have tried to grab ITTL, as
IOTL, @ least some of Mexico due to press-
ire from the South. Canada was too far north
to harbor slavery. Mexico, OTH, lays even
further south- perfect territory for the "pec-
ulnar institution". The South would have thus
demanded its acquisition.

IMO more, because having Canada would’ve made the free-slave balance more in favor of free states. I’d expect the Mexican states/territories south of the OTL border to be annexed.

The south is unlikely to have the political clout to force the issue with more northern, hence free soil politicians , in Congress and the senate. The issues between north and south could come to a head far sooner than they did OTL.

I am unsure if the White, Anglican, Empire Loyalists are going to be the most desirable of citizens. Anyways, are we including British Columbia and Rupert's Land in this? And I would say that the Americans having Canads would lead to awkwardness and hostility between the Americans and British, seriously affecting their economies. The US will probably still snag Texas and California, if only because they don't have many Mexicans there.

If the US is more confident that there'll be internal free-state domination, John Quincy Adams won't deliberately go for less territory than the United States could conceivably get from Spain. JQA was worried about adding more territory and emboldening slavery.

Here the US-New Spain/Mexico border will be on the Brazos or Colorado River.

Meanwhile the US very likely will ultimately gain northern California because there were just so many Americans pouring into that particular region.

Still, Mexico likely holds on to more territory here.

Short of roughly the Gadsden Purchase gains, yes, the U.S. would likely get just as much of Mexico as in OTL.

The All Mexico movement was dominated by Northerners.
