WI Spain defeated the revolt of Mexico or avoided the revolts altogether, keeping control of Mexico through the mid-19th century.

Would this likely slow down the Anglo-American colonization of Texas and conquest of California and New Mexico compared with OTL, or would it leave the pace unaffected?

Yes because Spain was a corpse that couldn't see the writing on the wall in regards to its American empire. Its possible that the Spanish Navy could put up a better fight against the US but on land they'd probably be weaker. Many Mexicans despised the Spanish by this time and probably would've had a hard time fighting for them.

I personally see it happening, though for now I'll need to hash out the details. But considering George Rogers Clark wanted to filibuster Spanish New Orleans in the 1790s, certainly fighting the Spanish North American Empire in the 1840s seems plausible.

Probably faster.

Spain will be too busy crushing revolts in Mexico City to worry about the northern territories. Spain also has European, South American, and Caribbean commitments to deal with. A 1840s Spanish-American War would probably be the equivalent of the OTL Mexican War, but with an additional front in Cuba.

Plus, aggression against Spain will have more support among the American people, including the Whigs. Some were against the Mexican War OTL because Mexico was a "sister republic." Spain will have no such sympathy. Expect a lot more territory to be taken.

I believe the US would expand faster than in the OTL seeing as how easy it would be. I mean Spain would be tied down with revolts/rebellions/revolutions so America would advance quickly through the west, even possibly take parts of Mexico like the Baja. Instead of the American-Mexican War it would be the Spanish-American War with 3 fronts. And the region did not matter whose hands it was in (Spain or Mexico) it was irrelevant, the US would continue with Manifest Destiny even if it provoked wars. (my 2 cents)

Faster and Farther

Spain was a weak sister in 1820. They lost everywhere in the Americas except Cuba. The US could haven taken Mexico down to the southern tip of Baja and what of the Caribbean it wanted. Fighting Spain would pose fewer problems in Congress than Mexico.

I'm going to affirm what's been said already. Spain was tottering in the 19th century (and onward) - I mean, losing all of their land-based colonies in one bound is a sign of weakness. That said, if Spain, say, completely let South America go and concentrated on keeping North America, the US would find no impediment in blazing through faster and farther.

ahhhm...
Why....do they want to do this...?

When do they want to do this?

and how does Spain actually manage this?

Answer those fiirst and you can then answer these questions. Because a Spain that has managed to hold onto New Spain is not the "decrepit corpse" that you all seem to think it would be. That and early half of century the relationship with France and Britain is pretty tight....attacking a European power is not gonna sit well ....with well...ANY of them. Spain will have a lot of sympathy.

If you have a POD that makes Spain remain a superpower into the 19th century, the US won't exist. Spain can keep Mexico for sure - it won't be easy, but you can twiddle things around for long enough for the US to barge in, Britain will definitely like to see America and Spain bludgeon each other to death, and France'll probably be killing itself with Prussia, Austria, and Italy.
