In the mid 1980's the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, and the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, Attempted to merge, Even uniting under a holding company The Santa Fe Southern Pacific Corporation. A paint scheme was even adopted the "Kodachrome" scheme. Unfortunately the justice department, and the interstate commerce commission struck down the merger in a 4-1 vote in 1987. The Santa Fe Southern Pacific Corporation, was renamed to the Santa Fe Pacific Corporation, and sold the SP to The Denver & Rio Grande Western. My question is, was there a way that the SPSF merger could have happened?
