Many assume that had he not been assassinated, RFK would've won the 1968 Democratic nomination and beaten Nixon in November. While there's no doubt Kennedy would've swept the primaries after winning California, and he probably would've beaten Nixon if nominated given how close Humphrey came in the general, RFK winning the nomination is less certain. Humphrey far outmatched RFK in both committed and uncomitted delegates; in fact Humphrey had more delegates than RFK and McCarthy combined. In 1968, nominations were won at the convention - not the primaries. Nonetheless, Kennedy was gaining momentum at the time of his death and feasibly could have beaten Humphrey. But could is not the central question. Rather, would RFK have won the 1968 Democratic nomination had he lived?
